Pregnancy and Lower Limb

Physiological Changes in the Lower
Limbs During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, significant physiological changes occur throughout a woman’s body, including in the lower limbs. These changes are primarily attributed to hormonal fluctuations and the increased weight bearing associated with the growing fetus.

Symptoms during Pregnancy

One common alteration is the gradual loosening of ligaments, particularly those supporting the pelvis and lower back, which can lead to instability and discomfort in the feet and ankles. This increased laxity can result in a variety of lower limb issues such as flat feet, overpronation, and plantar fasciitis.

Additionally, the additional weight gained during pregnancy places greater stress on the feet, exacerbating existing foot conditions or leading to the development of new ones.

Edema

Swelling, known as edema, is also a common occurrence, particularly in the feet and ankles, due to decreased circulation and fluid retention. This swelling can further contribute to discomfort and may increase the risk of developing conditions like venous insufficiency or deep vein thrombosis. Proper foot care during pregnancy is crucial to alleviate discomfort and prevent ingrown toenails. Wearing supportive footwear, practicing regular foot exercises, elevating feet when possible, and seeking our professional podiatric care can help manage symptoms on the lower limb.
